iDigBio Responds to Call for International Collaboration
The expansive scope of iDigBio’s activities places it in the forefront of national and international digitization and data aggregation efforts. Recognizing the importance of its numerous international partners and encouraged by the NSF to expand international collaborations, iDigBio accepted an invitation to join a digitization symposium featured at the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress held at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, and to follow the symposium with a digitization workshop for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), in Canberra, Australia.

SPNHC 2013 – DemoCamp: Demonstration of iDigBio’s Specimen Data Portal
Demo Camp live demonstrations are a highlight of the annual SPNHC conferences. This year, iDigBio took this great opportunity to show the natural history collections community all we've accomplished in two years’ time. iDigBio Principal Investigator, Pam Soltis, stepped up to show off the iDigBio Data and Image Portal.

From June 17-21, seven members of iDigBio (Gil Nelson, Pam Soltis, Joanna McCaffrey, Larry Page, Bruce MacFadden, Kevin Love and Deborah Paul) participated in SPNHC 2013, which is the annual meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (http://www.spnhc.org/), fondly referred to as “spinach.”
Research & Professional Development Opportunities for Graduate Students at SESYNC
The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) is excited to offer new professional development and training opportunities specially designed for graduate students interested in conducting research on the complex interactions between human and natural systems.
We are now accepting applications from currently-enrolled PhD students in the natural, social, and computational sciences for a Networking & Proposal Writing Workshop. This workshop will provide graduate students with:
- introductions to SESYNC, socio-environmental synthesis research, team science, and actionable science;
- networking opportunities to build professional relationships with other students, particularly those from different disciplines interested in the same types of research questions;
- training sessions on the methods, challenges, and strategies associated with writing successful proposals, especially those related to the type of work SESYNC supports; and
- an overview of the two graduate research Themes, for which SESYNC will solicit proposals following the Networking & Proposal Writing Workshop.
The workshop will be held over 2½ days in Annapolis, MD, from January 15–17, 2014. It is intended to maximize progress by graduate students intending to apply to the research opportunities described at www.sesync.org/graduate-student-themes . Travel to our facilities in Annapolis, MD, accommodations, and food expenses for workshop attendees will be provided by SESYNC.

GUID Guide for Data Providers
A Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) is a unique reference number used as an identifier. Complexities associated with specimens and associated, dynamic data in natural history collections have led to differences in opinions about how to create GUIDs and where they are required vs. recommended. This guide is intended to give data providers the information necessary to assign GUIDs that will allow iDigBio to ingest and share data.
