iDigBio Terms of Use Policy

Purpose of this document

Your use of the website, wiki, portal, appliances, Application Programming Interface (API), data, information, or other products or services offered by iDigBio (“Services”) is subject to these Terms of Use (“Terms”). iDigBio may modify these Terms at any time without prior notice to you by posting revised Terms via the iDigBio website. Your use of the Services constitutes your binding acceptance of these Terms, including any modifications. iDigBio is a program of the Florida Museum of Natural History, a unit of the University of Florida, a public body corporate of the State of Florida.

iDigBio hosts Services that provide access to certain materials. iDigBio is not responsible for the validity of any materials that it provides or makes available through the Services. iDigBio may accept or reject any materials on the Services in its sole discretion.

Privacy Policy

By using the Services, you agree that iDigBio may collect and use any information or materials you provide. iDigBio does not sell nor disclose any User data to any third parties. Any personal data (e.g., name, password) collected from the Services are for authentication and are not related to any search history a User generates. iDigBio collects personal information to preserve the safety of the data and materials in the Services.   • Data: Text, metadata, structured data, graphics, audio, video, multimedia, and static images in various digital formats about vouchered biodiversity specimens.
  • Data Publisher: A person who makes Data available to iDigBio for use in the Services and either owns or has permission to make the Data available.
  • User: Anyone who accesses or uses the Services.
  • Sensitive Data: Data that the Data Publisher deems unfit for display, for example, localities of threatened or endangered species.

Citing Data

The User is responsible for citing Data from the Services in publications using the Global Biodiversity Information Facility’s (GBIF) recommended practices ( Each download from the iDigBio Portal includes a citation file that follows GBIF’s query-based citation style. For example: (2016),

Your Content Provided to the Site

iDigBio only accepts Data that are derived from vouchered biodiversity specimens, not observation data. By providing Data to the Services, you are certifying that (1) you are the owner of the Data or that you have the owner’s express permission to provide the Data to iDigBio and (2) presentation of the Data in the Services does not violate another’s copyright. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless iDigBio for all claims and liabilities arising from any violation of property rights, privacy rights, and copyright rights that relate to the Data that you provide to iDigBio.

Sensitive Data

iDigBio accepts all Data it receives via the Services as-is. It makes no effort to mask Sensitive Data. The Data Publisher is solely responsible to mask or withhold information, including Sensitive Data, from the public.


iDigBio is not liable nor responsible for the content of Data that are provided via the Services or for any damage, claim, or liability from an inability to use the Services. iDigBio disclaims all claims and liability for and makes no express or implied warranties with respect to the Services and their manufacturers, including without limitation, any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
