At the end of the second day of the iDigBio summit, Dr. Greg Riccardi, iDigBio Co-PI at Florida State University, gave a presentation on globally unique identifiers or GUIDs. You can find a recording of the presentation, as well as his PowerPoint slides here:

GUID Best Practices
iDigBio staff are collecting use cases related to the generation and application of GUIDs. A position paper will be distributed to TCNs in early January for comment, with a final best practices recommendation to be published in mid-January. Several use cases and studies are linked below for community review. Additional input and comment are welcomed.

InvertNet GUID
Here is an example of how the GUIDs are generated within InvertNet database:

InvertNet - One GUID Per Tray
Thank you for your post Nahil. Could you clarify if InvertNet is currently producing a single GUID for an entire tray of specimens? What metadata (if any) is available for each individual specimen within the image?
Metadata for insect drawers
In response to Jason's query: We're still working out the details of what metadata to include for whole drawers versus unit trays (the smaller foam-bottom boxes within the drawers) versus single specimens. For drawers, we're thinking, at minimum, the metadata will include institution, collection, room, taxonomy (2 or more fields), and some fields related to the McGinley collection profile (a set of numerical scores reflecting the condition of the specimens and the level of curation of the drawer contents). The drawer metadata also include info captured automatically by the camera and embedded into the image file at the time the image is acquired (f-stop, exposure, etc.).
Ultimately the specimens within a drawer will be segmented out from the whole drawer image, with each specimen assigned a unique ID (either a pre-existing barcode or other GUID when one exists, or a newly assigned one) and the relevant Darwin Core metadata.
