Director of Education & Programs
This leadership position is part of a structure that aligns museum resources around visitor engagement and experience, and elevates Education within the institution overall.
This position is responsible for developing and delivering nationally-innovative programs and content aligned with the needs of visitors, the public, schools and state curricula. The Director of Education is responsible for leading Education in the development of a suite of innovative, effective, and compelling programs and educational offerings that attracts, retains, and engage diverse audiences. The Director of Education oversees and sets the strategic direction for outreach and public programs. To be successful in this role you will
- Lead the development of a welcoming, compelling, visitor-centric museum and informal education experience that is strategic, intentional and integrated from first contact to post-visit.
- Encourage innovation and creative prototyping of programs by Education staff while simultaneously using evaluation and data to define and measure success—improving and scaling ideas that work while ending those that are not as successful.
- Build and maintain a process for keeping and tracking assessment/impact data that aligns with the museum’s organizational systems.
- Be an active and visible participant in the Milwaukee education community and beyond, developing a community of practice with program partners large and small.
- Be responsible for museum education efforts at every level—from populist to scholarly—including involvement in teams developing interpretive texts, technologies and programs for permanent and temporary exhibitions, class visits and curriculum, lectures and public programs, adult programming and lectures, specialized service programs, docent efforts and general museum content and programs meant to activate the institution and engage the wider community around topics of interest.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in the natural, life, museum, or technological sciences preferred. Master’s degree in Education and at least 5 years of progressively advanced experience in formal and/or informal education are required. Compelling educational leader in the museum field with practical experience of what works in museums, as well as the ability to be a visionary and articulate advocate for innovation and new models of museum education is preferred. Must have knowledge of and commitment to understanding advances in pedagogy, national and statewide academic standards.

Salary Range
$70,000.00 - $80,000.00 Salary/year
