WiSE at UF is offering a spring camp: during one week, a small group of selected middle school girls (up to 12 6th and 7th graders) will experience exciting real-world science and become advocates of what they learned back in their communities. This camp will take the form of a combination of hands-on experiments directly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) departments at UF, educational workshops and talks on careers in science, and presenting themselves to others as a science advocate. The days will be filled with fun activities, from collecting plants and bugs to watching the sun through a telescope! Meetings with scientists and students alike will create a network between the girls and the University of Florida that will hopefully last for a long time!
We believe this experience will demystify the prospects of a scientific career for girls, and also expose them to a range of scientific disciplines that they might not have considered, or be aware of.
Back in their schools or communities, the girls will present what they learned through talks, articles in local school papers, a video, etc… the possibilities are endless!
Applications for the WiSE Girlz Science Spring Camp are due February 15th, 2014 and will be reviewed within two weeks. The camp is comprised of the full 5 days (9am-5pm, with possibility of before- and after- camp care) and cannot be attended partially. A fee of $10 per day is charged, and financial aid is available. The money from the fees will be used for the student at the completion of the 5 days of camp for the purchase of science fair supplies or a coupon for further science camp at UF.
The application package can be obtained from your science teacher/community leader. A letter of recommendation from your teacher/community leader is requested. The package consists of a questionnaire and a letter of motivation from the student.
