Join colleagues in an informal, bi-weekly discussion on various topics related to digitizing paleontology collections and sharing the digitized data. No advance registration required, and you are welcome to drop in for only part of the hour! Recordings and notes from these discussion sessions can be found on the Paleo Digitization Working Group wiki.

Topics for upcoming happy hour discussions are:

  • May 21st - Public lands and sensitive localities (incl. land ownership, PRPA, sharing coordinate data, etc.)
  • June 4th - Sharing georeferencing resources (incl. archival materials, locality equivalencies, geographic expertise, historic place names, etc.)
  • June 18th - Tools for georeferencing (incl. specific georeferencing tools, archival materials, measuring/estimating locality uncertainty, PLSS/TRS data, etc.)
  • July 2nd - Georeferencing data management issues (incl. historic place names, locality equivalencies, locality associations such as sampling horizons, database/CMS setups, etc.)
  • July 16th - Implementing data standards (incl. using the Darwin Core standard, using the ABCD standard, controlled vocabularies, etc.)
  • July 30th - Stratigraphy
  • August 13th - Preparations and Standardizing Anatomical Elements terms
  • August 27th - Citing collections data (including a brief demo of how to use GitHub for collections management as seen in LACMIP)
  • September 10th - Taxonomy, Part I
  • September 17th - Taxonomy, Part II
  • October 8th - Updates from various other paleo-related activities
  • October 29th - Updates from various other paleo-related activities
  • November 5th - How do we count things? **Rescheduled from 10/29** (including how we deal with slabs, part/counterpart, lots, etc.)
  • November 19th - How do we count things? Part II (continuing the conversation from November 5th)
  • December 3rd - Identifiers (including for specimens, localities, people, etc.)
