The Entomological Society of America will host a symposium titled "Out of the field and into the lab: the state of the art in processing biodiversity to publication" during Entomology 2014, ESA’s 62nd Annual Meeting. This event will be held November 16-19, 2014 in Portland, Oregon.
The symposium date is Tuesday, November 18, 2014 from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Summary Statement:
The goal of this symposium is to address the issues involved with processing the specimens from insect biodiversity surveys. This symposium intends to follow up on the 2013 SysEB symposium: Pitfalls, Malaise, and Hoping It All Pans Out: the State of the Art in Field Collecting Methods for Insect Biodiversity Surveys. This symposium follows the annual meeting theme of "grand challenges beyond our horizon" by tackling the tightest bottleneck we currently face in our quest to describe insect biodiversity. The talks for this symposium will focus on how to streamline the workflow for processing specimens, handling the data, and reaching publication. The topics include recruiting volunteers, specialized equipment, streamlining database entry with excel, managing multiple forms of data for individual specimens, processing specimens that require specialized preservation, prepping photos and plates, and similar topics that come from the speaker (i.e., advice and pitfalls). Posters from symposium may be used to allow members to present images of their equipment, systems, set-up, and workflow. This will spread our ideas beyond our own labs. Speakers are encouraged to ask their head technicians, collection managers, and those of similar positions to present so that young and early career professionals can attend the meeting and present.
