WiSE Girlz Spring Science Camp
March 23-27, 2015
Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) at UF is proud to announce its spring camp: during one week, a small group of selected middle school girls (up to twelve 6th and 7th graders) will experience exciting real-world science and become advocates of what they learned back in their communities. This camp will include:
- hands-on experiments directly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) departments at UF,
- educational workshops with scientists and engineers on campus, and
- follow-up mentoring as the girls present themselves as science and engineering advocates.
The days will be filled with fun activities, from collecting plants and bugs to building their own telescope! Meetings with scientists and students alike will create a lasting network between the girls and the University of Florida. This experience will demystify the prospects of a scientific career for girls, exposing them to a range of scientific disciplines that they might not have considered or be aware of. Back in their schools or communities, the girls will present what they learned through talks, articles in local school papers, a video… the possibilities are endless!
Applications for the WiSE Girlz Science Spring Camp are due as soon as possible, as invitations space is limited. The camp is comprised of the full 5 days (9am-4pm), with possibility of before- and after- camp care, and cannot be attended partially. A fee of $10 per day is charged, and financial aid is available.
The application package can be obtained from your science teacher/community leader. The package consists of an application, brief personal essay by the student, and a teacher endorsement letter.
