Workshop Agenda

Students will receive training in all aspects of how herbarium collections are made starting in the field moving through processing and mounting specimens and ultimately how we image, database and georeference specimens.

May 15th: Travel Day
By 5:00pm: Check into Hotel (Brentwood Inn & Garden 600 E Broadway Street, Farmington, NM, 87401)
5:30 pm: Group Dinner at San Juan College/Discuss logistics for Field Day
Introductions of instructors/students/Overview of Agenda/Discussion about what skills/knowledge students would like to get out of the workshop
Introductions, overview of field day, big picture landscape context-environmental conditions, plant community of area: Lead: Nora
Ethnobotany of the Navajo Nation, geology of the San Juan basin: Lead: Adriano, Ken
Intro to iDigBio and project as a whole: Lead: Ryan

May 16th: Field Day North of Shiprock, NM
7 am: Breakfast at hotel
8 am: Meet at vehicles to travel to field location
9:20 am: Arrive at field location (Nora will provide maps)
9:30-10:15 min: Ethnobotany/plant ID with Arnold Clifford
10:15-10:30 am: Introduction to the importance of and how to do field plant collections: Lead:
10:30-10:45 am: Snack break (provided)
10:45-12:45 am: Introduction to BudBurst and field exercise: Lead: Jessa
12:45-1:45 pm: Sack Lunch (provided)
1:45-2:00 pm: Overview of collections sampling design, break into smaller groups: Lead: Nora
2:00-4:30 pm: Field collection and some plant identification/intro to plant keying in smaller groups (Nora will provide field sampling plan). Assess what plants are here as a group-Nora/Jesse will go out beforehand to figure out what plants will be present/flowering. Group Leads: Nora, Jesse, Ross, Dina, Ken and Adriano
4:30-5:30 pm: Travel back to Farmington
7 pm: Group dinner at Porter’s Restaurant and Smokehouse

May 17th: Intro to botany/identifications, specimen prep/curation (SJNM)
7 am: Breakfast at hotel, travel to San Juan College, NM
7:45 am-8:10 am: Discussion about why plant collections are important and introduction to collection-based botanical research: Lead: Dina
8:10-10 am: Classroom introduction to plant parts and family characteristics: Lead: Ross
10-10:15 am: Break
10:15-12 pm: Key out unknown collected plants in small groups: Group Leads: Ross, Dina, Ken and Adriano
12-1:00 pm: Lunch at San Juan College (provided)
1:00-2:30 pm: Herbarium specimen creation and mounting workshop: Lead: Ken
2:30-2:45 pm: Student presentation about niche modeling
2:45-3:00 pm: Break
3:00-4:30 pm: Digitization workshop: Lead: Ryan Allen
4:30: Travel to 3 Rivers Pizza
5:30 pm: Pizza dinner at 3 Rivers, Informal discussion about careers/opportunities in natural resources and botany

May 18th: Field trip to the Hogback
7 am: Breakfast at hotel
8 am: Meet at San Juan College, travel to field location
8-11:00 am: Field trip to look at rare/unique plants near Farmington on the Hogback formation and ethnobotany discussion: Lead: Ken Heil & Adriano Tsinigine
