The process and workflow for moving your collections database from being an internal-to-your-institution dataset to being ready and formatted for external use. Those external providers are usually GBIF, iDigBio, VertNet or any other data portal. The target for iDigBio ingestion is for the data to be mapped to Darwin Core for specimen data and Audubon Core for media, then to be packaged by IPT and supported by an RSS feed. Data mapping can include a variety of data manipulations, e.g., parsing data into separate fields, normalizing names, putting dates into ISO format (yyyy-mm-dd), and improving the data with additional fields to aid in searching in the aggregate, e.g., taxonRank, kingdom, order, family, institutionCode, collectionCode.
