The 2018 Entomological Collections Management Workshop [1] will be held at the California Academy of Sciences [2] (CAS) in San Francisco, California from July 23-26 (Monday-Thursday). The workshop will be led by co-instructors Dr. David G. Furth (Furth Museum Consulting [3]) and Dr. Floyd W. Shockley (Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History [4]), with guest lectures from Dr. Chris Grinter (CAS), Deborah Paul (iDigBio), and Katja Seltmann (UCSB). Topics cover collections care for both the physical and digital objects. Workshop topics include:
- Collection digitization techniques, management and workflows
- Collections management policies, procedures, plans, mission statements
- Collection Profiling/Assessment
- Kinds of collections (para-collections, teaching/exhibits, etc.)
- Collection profiling (assessment)
- Specimen packing & shipping
- Specimen preparation & labeling
- Storage: compactors, cabinets, drawers, trays (pinned, ethanol, slides)
