The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' Paleobotany Collection contains approximately 1600 specimens. Founded in the early 1900s, the collection consists of approximately 21% North Carolina material as well as material from 25 states and 13 countries representing 109 genera. The Paleobotany Collection includes an important fossil wood collection from Big Bend National Park in Texas, Triassic plants from North Carolina, and Pennsylvanian age plants from the famous Mazon Creek locality in Illinois and the Pottsville Formation of Alabama.
