The U.S. National Science Foundation and iDigBio are required to collect information on use of digitized collections-based specimen data. Please help us meet this requirement every time you use this search portal. Sustainability of the national digitization effort depends on evidence of data use! Maybe later.

California State University, Fullerton, and County of Orange, The John D. Cooper Archaeological and Paleontological Center

Specimen Records: 7,441
Media Records: 0
iDigBio Last Ingested Date: 2018-08-24

Established as a partnership between California State University, Fullerton and the County of Orange, through OC Parks, in 2009, the Cooper Center is committed to the preservation, curation, and management of the fossils and artifacts within the County for the purpose of scientific research, outreach, and education. The artifacts and fossils managed by the Cooper Center have been accumulated over the last four decades from sites in Orange County, California, that have undergone Cultural Resource Management (CRM) studies. The rocks of Orange County contain the fossilized remains of plants and animals from every major time period since the Jurassic - over 180 million years of prehistory! At this point, only a small fraction of the collection has been inventoried - about 20,000 specimens out of an estimated 3,000,000 or more from over 1,000 localities. Notable collections include: Eocene terrestrial mammals; late Oligocene-early Miocene terrestrial mammals; and Miocene-Pliocene marine mammals.
